He was a Detroit radioand television broadcasting legend. His voice was heard for over four decades on numerous great Detroit radio stations, such as CKLW, WJBK, WXYZ, WCAR, WMJC, WTWR, CKMR, and WCXI. Tom once had said that he did (to paraphrase his exact words), “three ‘tours of duty’ at CKLW. In the ’60s, ’70s, and in the ’80s.”
He formally began his illustrious radio career as a news person, while in his teens, in Buffalo in 1955. He left Buffalo’s WKBW for CKLW in Windsor in December 1964, replacing Terry Knight.
After 50 years in radio (and television) and having been in multiple radio markets around the country, Tom Shannon retired from broadcasting radio in 2005. Tom’s last DJ stint was on WHTT-FM, Buffalo. He was 67 at the time.
Surrounded by his loving family, Tom Shannon died of pancreatic cancer while in hospice care, Wednesday, May 26, 2021. He was 82.
Tom Shannon is a member of the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame and Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.

THE 1969 PONTIAC ‘JUDGE’ GTO
As the above dated chart implies, CKLW gave away a pair of 1969 Pontiac GTOs!
If you look closely, in the cover photo, you can see ‘The Judge’ badge on the front quarter panel, placed near the covered headlamps, and just in front of where Ed Mitchell is leaning on the passenger side.
In the Pontiac Motor Division’s ‘The Judge’ series, the GTO offered a rare RAM AIR IV 370 HP engine in 1969. According to the website Sports Car Market, Pontiac produced and sold 58,126 GTO hardtops, 7,328 GTO convertibles, 6,725 Judge hard tops (two ‘Judge’ models CKLW gave away) and 108 Judge convertibles were built by the end of that model year.
In 1969, the first year run of its production, the Pontiac “Judge” GTO hardtop commanded a pricey 3,500 dollars, equipped with the speedy RAM AIR IV engine. It’s mark-up value, having been debated by collectors, the rare 1969 ‘Judge’ Pontiac GTO has been sold at auctions, having taken bids totaling upwards of 300,000 dollars — for an original with numbers matching – just for the hard top.
Decades later, the more extremely rare ‘Judge’ convertibles have sold at auto auctions with numbers upwards over the half-million dollar mark. The Pontiac ‘Judge” GTO models were built in 1969, 1970, and 1971.

Canadian Government Drops Gavel; RKO Owned CKLW Must Change Hands to Canadian Ownership Or Must Dispose Station’s Assets
TORONTO — The Canadian Radio Television Commission has ruled that radio station CKLW in Windsor, Ont., will receive its license renewal until Sept. 1, 1970. But within that period of time, the station must divest itself of its U. S. ownership or lose its broadcasting license altogether.
The CRTC said that, according to its records, the issued shares in Western Ontario Broadcasting are now owned by RKO Distributing Co. of Canada, which is owned by RKO General Inc. in the U. S.
These shares must change hands to a Canadian-owned company within a year and a half or the station will lose its license. This decision was based on a Canadian government order of Sept. 20, 1968, which ruled that any Canadian broadcasting outlet must be “effectively owned and controlled by Canadians.”
CKLW applied for an exemption from this order based on its geographic and economic situation – the Detroit area which adjoins Windsor directly across the river. The CRTC could have recommended such an exemption if it had so chosen but in so doing it would have had to satisfy both itself and the federal cabinet that this action would not be contrary to public interests.
The commission said that after careful consideration of the petition of CKLW, it could not make such a recommendation.
The commission noted that it was granting the temporary license renewal to “give the licensee an opportunity to comply with its provisions or to dispose of the assets of the station.”END

A most unusual (if all but a rare) CKLW music chart from May 29, 1967. Strawberry Fields? Found this CKLW survey some time ago. Would like to know more behind this CKLW chart from 1967.
By May of 1967, the CKLW Hit Parader or Fun Radio charts were already in circulation, having been distributed to record retail outlets at that time.
Just thinking here, a wild guess — note Gary Mitchell — could it be the 1967 CKLW jocks were appointed a given chart week tabulating the CKLW top 30 hits with a DJ’s name on them?
But of course, we never came across a CKLW radio chart like this one! Feedback, anyone? Feel free dropping us your thoughts and comments. 🙂
